The role

As the Head of the Regulatory Management team you will be responsible for proactive engagement by a dedicated team of Regulatory Managers with the largest law firms principally in the City of London, many of which have a presence globally.

You will be responsible for the leadership and day to day management of the team, providing high quality regulatory and operational direction ensuring the efficient and effective utilisation of the team's resources and development. You will ensure that Regulatory managers engage constructively with key individuals in the firms to understand the nature of their services and clients, what risks exist or are emerging and how they are being managed. This is a pivotal role in helping us to not only give the public confidence in some of the UK’s most high profile law firms – which will in turn, safeguard the reputation of the profession – but also challenge those law firms to ensure that they work to the highest ethical and professional standards. You will also be responsible for oversight of the team's collaborative internal engagement with other functions within the SRA.

We are looking for someone who can provide leadership and management support to Regulatory Managers in their engagement and decision making relating to their firms. You will on occasions lead the SRA's relationship with firms and so need to have a proven ability to challenge and influence stakeholders at every level. You will manage, review and develop the strategy and engagement with the team's portfolio whilst using your already developed management skills to ensure development of individuals capabilities, skills and technical knowledge through performance management, regular meetings and monthly one to ones.

You will lead by example in a fast moving environment, challenging assumptions whilst helping to shape the way legal services are regulated to the benefit of the public.

Essential

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and experience:

Relevant regulatory experience at a comparable regulator and/or relevant experience in a law firm.

A good awareness and understanding of the legal profession, the main participants in the market, firms' operating models, their processes and culture and financial and economic drivers.

Evidence of devising and implementing effective strategic and operational plans and processes.

Experience of developing performance management frameworks and delivery against key performance indicators.

Experience of leading, motivating and developing teams generally and during periods of change.

Experience of effective day to day management and development of individuals.

Strong and credible personal and influencing skills, and evidence of networking effectively and building relationships with key and challenging stakeholders.

Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders

Experience of operating autonomously and collaborating as part of cross functional team.

An ability to analyse large amounts of complex information, make clear judgements based on relevant risk and business considerations, in order to identify key issues and appropriate solutions.

Education to degree level or equivalent experience.

Desirable

Good knowledge of the legal framework and the SRA’s principles / rules against which the key regulatory risks in the regulation of legal services are assessed.

Willingness to learn and develop, taking on new responsibilities and adopting a flexible, pragmatic approach to work.
