The Professional Ethics Guidance Team is seeking a highly motivated and positive individual to join a skilled and supportive team of existing Ethics Advisers who specialise in providing advice on the rules which govern solicitors’ conduct and assist solicitors in applying these to their situation. The advice is provided mainly over the telephone, but also in writing. With a natural ability to build rapport quickly, you will be the first port of call on a busy helpline and will manage a substantial number of calls on a wide variety of subject, in addition to written responses to enquiries.

The work is pressurised but varied and challenging, and you will need to take ownership of each query, meeting the highest performance standards at all times. Training will be provided on the rules and principles of conduct, but applicants must show an aptitude to apply them in relation to individual situations.

You will be required to work rotating shifts covering the hours of 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

Essential

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and experience:

Qualified lawyer

Experience in legal practice

Strong concern for professional standards

Ability to give advice to a wide range of professionals

Ability to apply principles and criteria in decision making

Ability to grasp complex factual cases and draw out critical information

Resilient and able to work in a constantly changing environment

Ability to work under pressure to deliver a large workload to meet deadlines

Ability to work on own initiative as well as being a team player

Excellent drafting, research, analytical and problem solving skills

IT literate (Windows based software)

Desirable

Track record of leading and delivering solutions, taking responsibility and accountability for the successful resolution of complex issues

Ability to manage ad hoc projects and personal development

Understanding of regulatory and operational risk

Knowledge of the application of relevant legislation, regulatory standards, processes and procedures
