The Law Society is the independent professional body and membership organisation for solicitors, with a membership of over 170,000 individual solicitors and over 10,000 legal firms, operating in domestic and overseas markets. The Law Society actively engages with stakeholders to promote and ensure the highest professional standards and also has a public interest role to support access to justice and upholds the rule of law.

Following the appointment of Catherine Dixon as CEO of the Law Society in January 2015, and the consequent appointment of a new executive team, the Law Society has completed a significant piece of work to examine and design a new people strategy with a particular focus on learning and development, staff engagement, organisational design and work force planning and retention. The new Director of People will play a pivotal role in delivering the People Strategy, leading the Law Society’s HR team to ensure successful delivery.

The successful candidate will be an experienced senior HR/OD business partner, within an organisation of comparable scale. S/he will bring a broad and deep range of functional HR/OD expertise, including organisation development, talent management, organisation design, learning and development, employee engagement and employee relations. S/he will be experienced in driving operational and cultural change in a functionally diverse and highly qualified organisation.

Essential

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and experience:

Significant experience of operating in highly political and matrix style environment with both gravitas and
emotional intelligence

Experience of operating within a not-for-profit, quasi public/private sector organisation, membership body
or regulatory environment

Experience of working with unions and managing negotiations

Significant experience of managing and influencing senior and high profile stakeholders with complex
needs, and the ability to work with them for pragmatic outcomes

Experience of implementing People Strategic aims

Experience of leading and developing teams both within HR and across other business areas

Experience of working within significant transformational change programmes

Desirable

Fellow of CIPD

Qualified/Certified Coach/background in establishing organisational coaching platform

Experience of managing senior and NED appointments

Experience in general/business management roles rather than HR specific
