The Law Society is the professional body for solicitors with over 150,000 members in England, Wales and around the world, and over 11,000 member firms operating in UK and international markets. The Society represents, supports and promotes solicitors, and plays an important public interest role. The legal services sector is going through fast-paced and dynamic changes, and the Law Society is focussed on the current and future needs of the profession both in the UK and globally.


The Executive Director, External Affairs will lead the development of the Law Society’s policy agenda and its internal and external engagement, and will build the Society’s influence with the profession and its stakeholders. They will lead the Society’s work to influence government and regulatory policy, as well as raising the profile of the profession through campaigns. Overseeing the External Affairs team, this person will ensure a coherent approach to external engagement across the Law Society’s activity, and will contribute to the broader organisational strategy as part of executive team. 


The successful candidate will bring significant leadership and management experience of comparable scale in complex stakeholder environments. S/he will also have external stakeholder management experience at a national level, with a knowledge of legislative process and government. Strong influencing and communication skills are essential, as is senior-level experience working on strategy and policy development across a range of issues. Experience in a membership body or in a legal/regulatory environment is desirable, but not essential.

Essential

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and experience:

Significant leadership and management experience

Experience of external stakeholder management at a national level, including but not limited to government, with a good knowledge of the legislative process

Strong influencing and exceptional communication skills with ability to present complex issues to a variety of internal and external audiences

Board experience of contributing to and/or advising on strategy and policy development at a senior level

Experience of leading and delivering significant change and business improvement initiatives including people and cultural change

Significant experience of working in a fast paced and issues rich environment with a strong customer/member focus

Desirable

Experience of legal or regulatory environments

Experience of membership bodies
