The Law Society wishes to recruit a Policy Adviser (Professional Standards & Ethics) for its Regulatory Affairs Unit. The Unit leads the Society’s work in developing policy on all aspects of the regulatory system affecting solicitors, liaises with the various regulatory and representative bodies in the legal sector and leads the lobbying to take forward the Society’s policies in this area. It is increasingly a priority for the Society to work to embed ethics and high professional standards in solicitors' practices and the operation of their firms through the provision of guidance, and other products and support services . This role is an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of that agenda.

Candidate requirements

The successful candidates will be degree educated or equivalent and should have experience in policy development, preferably both in a legal services context and with particular knowledge and experience of working with standards and ethics. The ability to deal with complex and controversial issues will be important as is the ability to work in a team. Strong written and oral communication skills are essential. Knowledge of the solicitors profession and of professional bodies would be useful but not essential.

Essential

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and experience:

Knowledge of the issues covered by the post.

Relevant experience of working in a policy or business development environment.

Strong understanding of the legal and economic system and the role of solicitors in it.

Ability to analyse complex issues and assess their implications for the profession and Law Society policy on that issue.

Ability to provide advice and support to the profession.

Strong written and oral communications skills.

Knowledge and understanding of the relevant policy and legislative environment.

Ability to represent The Law Society credibly at a senior level.

Ability to engage and influence policy development at a senior level across government and the profession, as well as within the Law Society.

Desirable

Project Management skills, including setting and monitoring delivery of KPIs with grant recipients.
