The Law Society wishes to recruit a Policy Assistant for its Regulatory Affairs Unit. The Unit leads the Society’s work in developing policy on all aspects of the regulatory system affecting solicitors, liaises with the various regulatory and representative bodies in the legal sector and leads the lobbying to take forward the Society’s policies in this area. The Unit divides its work into areas of specialism covering professional indemnity insurance, regulatory processes, education & training and professional standards & ethics. This role is an exciting opportunity to support of each of these areas of work.

Candidate requirements

The successful candidates will be degree educated or equivalent and should have experience in policy development, preferably both in a legal services context and with particular knowledge and experience of the subject areas of the unit in a regulatory context. The ability to deal with complex and controversial issues will be important as is the ability to work in a team. Strong written and oral communication skills are essential. Knowledge of the solicitors profession and of professional bodies would be useful but not essential.

Essential

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and experience:

An understanding of legal practice and knowledge of the legal environment and the role of the legal profession in it.

Relevant experience of working in a policy or business development environment with experience in the relevant area of law/practice/geographical region.

Ability to assimilate new issues quickly and analyse complex issues with an understanding of the policy implications of proposals.

Ability to research and prepare policy papers and to explain complex issues clearly and concisely.

Ability to draft for online communications.

Tact and diplomacy in dealing with a wide range of individuals.

Awareness of the interests of others in the organisation.

Shows reliability and resilience in difficult circumstances.
